The long path to the throne has just begun for Aelin Galathynius. As the kingdoms of Erilea fracture around her, enemies must become allies if Aelin is to keep those she loves from falling to the dark forces poised to claim her world. With war looming on all horizons, the only chance for salvation lies in a desperate quest that may mark the end of everything Aelin holds dear. Will Aelin succeed in keeping her world from splintering, or will it all come crashing down?
I dont even know where to start…
I first started reading this book when it was released on September 6th, as soon as I got it in my hands I started reading. I was loving the book and then, I started University and get into the biggest reading slump I have experienced in a LOOOOONG time, but dont get me wrong I was loving the book.
So my friend finished this book almost instantly and she shouted at me daily until I started reading again, so I did and so I blame her for all the emotional trauma this book caused me!
I’m going to give you brief over view of my thoughts and feelings and I may delve in and out of things I’m impressed/ annoyed with.
The first few chapters of this book were like coming home, SJM world building is just astounding and I think I’ll forever have a map of Erliea in my head WITH blu-ray definition…hehe.
And then came Manon…I will go out there and say in the beginning I was pretty “meh” about Manon, she added to the story line but I hadn’t much feeling for her. This book made that do coin flip on me because I adore her now. The character building in Manon alone is unbelievable and extremely clever, and all the added information about her heritage and that’s she’s actually a long lost heir. Much like our Aelin.
This addition of Manons history and heritage just proved to me how amazingly complex and interwoven SJM writing is and it’s so interesting to be able to see certain characteristics mirrored in many of her characters.
In terms of Rowan, I am just falling more and more in love with him as the days (or books) go on. I loved that we got to meet his cadre! And omg Aedions father! I did not see that coming, maybe that makes me naive but it’s the truth. Rowan’s character has just gotten stronger and stronger and this book killed my emotions in terms of that, when he screamed, “where is my wife”, my heart was thundering in my chest.
This wouldn’t be a TOG review without mentioning our main character would it? From book 1 I was in love with Celaena, the arrogance, pride, humor and even just her general personality. I found her to be quite relatable (other than the whole assassin thing) and I can wholeheartedly say that the progression though the series has just made me love her character more and more. I know I’ve mentioned before SJM complex writing but I thought in this book it was very prominent, being able to see how “Celaenas” past has influenced “Queen Aelin Ashryver Galathynius’s” present decisions…I loved it!
The only really issue I had with this book isn’t even really an issue at all I suppose…I missed Chaol. Chaol has been such a large part of the entire story line that I felt him being “away” just made the story lacking in the slightest bit. Now I know that there are some short stories in particular versions of the book but I think we still should have gotten a few updates in the main novel.
Now I don’t want to rattle on too long because if you haven’t read it (why are you reading this there’s spoilers 😱) I do want you to enjoy the book firsthand. But just know, I adored this book. I cried, I laughed and I cried again. I already want to reread the series and I’m dying for book 6.
I hope this wasn’t too boring!
